History on the Trails

Story-telling is a rich part of how we capture history and stay connected to the land and the people.

Renfrew County has a rich history of logging, mills, railroad, settlements and geology.Ā  Throughout our trails, you will find glimpses of history, culture and unique geological features that most people wander past unaware.

In 2019 Renfrew County ATV Club partnered with theĀ Ontario’sĀ Highlands Tourism OrganizationĀ and Ontario Tourism to establish 6 interpretive signs throughout our trails to capture and share some of those stories.Ā  Thank you to our resident experts and local story-tellers Pat Wyse, Anya Gangsterer and Don Webb for helping us keep this geology, history and culture alive.

Time To Go Wandering!

Look for these interpretive signs on the Pakkotinna Trail System and Opeongo Trail System, starting spring 2019 in partnership with the Ontario’s Highlands Tourism Organization and funded by the Government of Ontario.

You can find location icons at the top of our trailhead welcome boards for each of the two systems.
